AbstractInformation technology, especially search engine technology popular on the Internet, offers promising opportunities for future research into Chinese Lexical Semantics. This paper demonstrates the significance and the urgent need for lexical semantics in natural language processing. Chinese lexical resources developed by the Institute of Computational Linguistics of Peking University (ICL/PKU) is introduced in this paper, which contains mainly four components: (1) Grammatical Knowledge Base of Contemporary Chinese (GKB), (2) Chinese Semantic Dictionary (CSD), (3) Chinese Concept Dictionary (CCD), and (4) Word-Sense Tagging Corpus of Contemporary Chinese (CSC). Building a comprehensive language knowledge base by combining all existing language resources is proposed in the last section; main ideas, technological measures, progress to date are outlined.
